This reply was meant for another substack. EKB, your story does not require levity. You were quite the Mama Bear, as I imagine all the mothers out there had to show their teeth on occasion. If not mothers, then who?
Actually I loved the story and yes levity is good. No matter what we are going through it is still important to laugh. I remember when my sister and I were sitting with my mother in hospice. Something struck us so funny we burst out laughing. I think the nurses thought we were losing it, but you do need to remember you are human no matter what.
I need to bring some levity to this feed. My 98 year old mother asked if I was married yet. I told her I have been married for 47 years to which she replied, oh, you never told me. My husband joined the Facetime call and she was not sure who he was. My mother also thinks I live in Paris. My Holocaust survivor mother has outlived everyone. May she continue to surprise me. All is good.
People forget that jews have been targets for murderous terrorists since the 1920s and that they have shown up in the United States with increasing frequency since the 1960s. For instance, see on Sirhan shot Robert F Kennedy because of the support for Israel. Great article.!
I still rememberer, Black September, PFLP, Red Brigade Bader Meinhof, Weather Underground, etc. Some of us grew up in the 60s and 70s and we have long memories.
In that vein, Harvard provided the academic legitimacy for the DC killings .. when the Carr center hosts Palestinian filmmakers who constantly talk about how evil Zion in the star and Zion is a is kinda hard to avoid the association or their intent
Actually they did. They all did when they teach Fanon, Foucault, praises terror as a legitimate tool, etc. I wonder if they can be sued for aiding and abetting. I think you would have a free speech issue, but there is that slight exception where you know what you promote will cause violence and you are in a position of power. Aren’t they the ones who say words are violence
I am happy to stumble upon your piece Beautiful writing. Everything you say is 100% correct, and that is the most depressing and the saddest part.
For me, as a former Jewish refugee from the Soviet Union, who spent many years trying to escape the omnipresent antisemitism of the Soviet society, how ironic it is to face it in my adoptive homeland. It is not exactly deja vu. There was no violence towards Jews in the USSR. We just couldn’t get into universities or be hired by organizations of our choice. Living in fear of physical violence is a new experience.
“Either way, right now I am not sure where I will be living a decade from now. Honestly, its up to you America if you can keep the promise you made to the world. Will the US remain the shining beacon on the hill?”
I wish it could be otherwise, but the Biblical answer to your final question above is, ‘No’.
And, in my view, this piece is akin to ‘the voice of one crying in the wilderness’ (Isaiah 40); a call for profound reflection, and for difficult decisions to be made, with the understanding that they demand a full commitment.
It breaks my heart to see what is happening on such a massive scale today. But Biblical prophecies from the Tanakh and Brit Hadasha, recorded thousands of years ago, made it clear that these things - and worse - would come ‘in the latter days’. Frankly, those make it clear that the USA, is going to fall; that the only ‘safe’ place for the Chosen People is the restored Land of Israel.
For well over a decade, I have sought to encourage my Jewish friends and acquaintances to make Aliyah, for these very reasons. A few have, but most have held back, for any number of quite understandable reasons.
But those prophesied ‘latter’ days are now upon us; we have entered a time of ‘sifting’, a time of ‘testing’, a time that is striping away masks and revealing what has been hidden all around us, as well as within our own hearts.
You point to the responsibility of America to determine the country’s future, and you are right to do so. But that call is obviously to individuals - and it is actually a universal call. Each of us, as individuals, bear the responsibility to choose how we will respond to the witness of our consciences, as well as the greater witness of the Word of G-d.
There always have been, and always will be, those who are unaware of, can’t ‘see’, misunderstand, refuse to accept, or distort the clear warnings and call of G-d.
Jeremiah 5:31 (Tanakh)
“The prophets prophesy falsely, and the priests rule accordingly; and My people like it so. But what will you do at the end of it?”
The times are dark indeed. But the true and living G-d; the G-d of Israel, makes it clear that, after they have run their course, these days will end in the fulfillment of every promise made to the Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob - and to the world that remains - through Him who reigns from the throne of David, in the city of Jerusalem, and the Land of Israel.
In the meantime, I bow my head in shame for those who claim to be Christians, yet fail to stand against the evil directed at the Jewish people and the nation of Israel - or worse, actively join in that evil. I grieve as well for those who are Jewish, who do the same - for whatever reason.
But my hope and prayer for both groups, as well as the masses of people struggling to find their way in the darkness, confusion, deception, and evil of these days, is that they would come to realize the errors of their ways, repent, and turn to the true and living G-d for forgiveness and salvation.
Daniel 12:10 (Tanakh)
“Many will be purified and purged and refined; the wicked will act wickedly and none of the wicked will understand; but the knowledgeable will understand.”
I am furious and shaken over the murders of two beautiful Jewish young people, Yaron Lischinsky and Sarah Milgrim last week; I live so far from them but I know their eyes were filled with love and hope; as I write this mine fill with tears and fury. After 10/7/23 I wrote that our police and government should shut down the campus and city-wide mobs protesting Israel's right to defense while harassing Jews on campus and in the streets. I wasn't alone asking for this; when did America become so hospitable to Jew-hatred? That was the obvious question. The Dems didn't do S**t. Trump seems to be doing something; is it too little too late?
I wrote on my stack after last Wednesday:
We must be vigilant and protect innocence and hope for, wherever they are, the murderous left is not far off. We must be alert, we must anticipate - wherever young people smile and imagine a future of love and family - especially if they are Jewish - murderous hate will be taking aim. The left and the Palestinian hate-beast are birthing murder babies; we’ve got to stop them before we all start circling the drain.
It is important to note: Yaron was Israeli, but not Jewish. He was a proud Christian, and he deserves to be remembered as one. It brings to mind the Rabbinic saying: "Once the Angel of Death has been given permission to reap victims, it does not differentiate between them." In this case between Jew and Christian.
I'm not so sure you can shut down marches and protests, they are free speech after all. But I agree that the powers that be could have done more. Investigate funding, and when they crossed the link like blocking traffic etc, they should have been arrested and prosecuted. But when you have shit DAs like Bragg in NY who dismissed charges against obvious law breakers the only thing the people can do is vote them out of office. Unfortunately, I am not sure that people are smart enough to do that. I am pretty sure that the Jews in manhattan will vote for any democrat over a republican no matter how antisemitic that democratic might be. Suicides, the lot of them.
Just look at the SAPIR discussion. Rahm Emanuel is still defending Obama, saying he is a friend to Israel. Democrats like him will get the rest of us killed.
For those who remember this is what happened with the protests against the Vietnam War which segued from peaceful protests to militant protests to acts of violence against universities and government institutions robbing of banks and murder all of which were glorified ny the mainstream media and winked at by the Democrats
This is a home run. Mandatory reading. I've been asking myself the same question for a while now. Will I be able to live out my life here? My kids? Their kids? It's not looking good at all right now. And good luck getting anyone who isn't jewish to even try to understand any of it. It's not even worth trying I've concluded. Scary times, once again.
‘It’ (hate, persecution, and ultimately, slaughter) will indeed shift to Christians.
BUT, it will be to ‘those kind of Christians’ (the true ones) not to any and every person that claims to ‘be’ a follower of Yeshua/Jesus.

💯 correct. I have spoken about this for years and most of my friends refused to listen. Our enemies within are also the enablers. Shame on Norm Eisen. I thank you as always.
I don't care if someone is antiTrump.Spell out your reasons, logically succinctly. But, TDS I have no patience for though. I did not know who he was so I looked him up. It says on his twitter feed that he is not owned by anyone but he is a Sr Fellow at Brookings. The largest donor to Brookings is Qatar. Not owned by anyone my tuchas.
Excellent post. Your insights are spot on. IMO the issue under-pinning it is spiritual.
There was a time in the USA when there was general agreement that "all men are created equal", and "in God we trust". There was a sense of moral accountability to an Absolute Truth-Giver/Creator.
That's been lost and the resulting moral relativism hearkens back to the book of Judges when "everyone did what was right in their own eyes". Didn't end well then, and things won't end well now.
Moral accountability is key isnt it? There used to be rights and wrongs. Moral relativism i agree has caused more issues than it solved. And yes i agree too that the under-pinning issue is spiritual. People need something to believe in, something that makes them feel good about themselves. And the omnicause is the thing that does it. Its why Wokism is the latest religion as well. Humans need a God and if we take away a just and merciful god, humans do have a way of finding Baal dont they?
i saw who was part of The Contrarian group and had no interest in anything any of them had to say. I dont mind alternate voices when it comes to politics. Our republic is built on that, in fact it demands it, but these people are not good faith actors.
But they are only talking heads. What they say doesn't really matter. Its who is in charge and what they do that will have consequences for the future. Its why our voices have to be the louder ones.
This is absolutely your best piece! I agree that if things go the way they might, you are right. And I'm working on connections to get myself to Israel if it becomes unsafe for me here too. But there are a lot of people working on the other side. Sure, the right has antisemites, but it's the Democrats who will just let us be killed and who have sympathy with the pro-Pali people. I went from being a lifelong Democrat to being a conservative (centrist maybe but leaning conservative) for two reasons: how the Left has stabbed Jews in the back and how they have destroyed/stood by for the destruction of urban black communities. Two different things, but they pushed me over the edge. I support those who support Israel and my Jewish friends. Progressives of all religions and races have made a bad situation worse. I plan to stay here and fight until a time when it's just not safe anymore, and with recent events, I'm not sure when that will be.
I think we all need to be more circumspect for the time being. How everything plays out we will have to wait and see. But we do not have to be bystanders in history. We can scream, shout and demand our rights like everyone else.
So one I think this is the best piece you’ve written so far. Two I took the following to heart growing up in post World War II America:
To the Hebrew Congregation in Newport, Rhode Island
[Newport, R.I., 18 August 1790]
Gentlemen.
While I receive, with much satisfaction, your Address replete with expressions of affection and esteem; I rejoice in the opportunity of assuring you, that I shall always retain a grateful remembrance of the cordial welcome I experienced in my visit to Newport, from all classes of Citizens.
The reflection on the days of difficulty and danger which are past is rendered the more sweet, from a consciousness that they are succeeded by days of uncommon prosperity and security. If we have wisdom to make the best use of the advantages with which we are now favored, we cannot fail, under the just administration of a good Government, to become a great and a happy people.
The Citizens of the United States of America have a right to applaud themselves for having given to mankind examples of an enlarged and liberal policy: a policy worthy of imitation. All possess alike liberty of conscience and immunities of citizenship It is now no more that toleration is spoken of, as if it was by the indulgence of one class of people, that another enjoyed the exercise of their inherent natural rights. For happily the Government of the United States, which gives to bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance requires only that they who live under its protection should demean themselves as good citizens, in giving it on all occasions their effectual support.
It would be inconsistent with the frankness of my character not to avow that I am pleased with your favorable opinion of my Administration, and fervent wishes for my felicity. May the Children of the Stock of Abraham, who dwell in this land, continue to merit and enjoy the good will of the other Inhabitants; while every one shall sit in safety under his own vine and figtree, and there shall be none to make him afraid. May the father of all mercies scatter light and not darkness in our paths, and make us all in our several vocations useful here, and in his own due time and way everlastingly happy.
Go: Washington
Three, I grew up in a Jabotinsky centered home my father and uncle were Betarim. They spent their teenage summers at camp Betar training in Hunter NY.
The George Washington letter was exactly what I was thinking about when I mentioned the promise of the US.
And yes, Jabotinsky was correct. Jews need to learn to protect themselves. Whether we learn to pick up a gun, which in a nation with a 2nd amendment we have that right like everyone else, self defense (martial arts if you dont like guns) is our legitimate right as well, plus we stop apologizing for being Jewish and push back on the haters.
You have captured the truth. It is a matter of when, the collective we, move to Israel, not if.

Pardon my late reply as I could not think of the phrase, morbid humor, which I think is essential to managing hard events.
I need to bring some levity to this feed. My 98 year old mother asked if I was married yet. I told her I have been married for 47 years to which she replied, oh, you never told me. Thanks. I think eventually yes.

For about 2000 years antisemitism has been the default. After the Shoah it became impolite to express it in public. Now it has re-emerged
True.
I am happy to stumble upon your piece Beautiful writing. Everything you say is 100% correct, and that is the most depressing and the saddest part.

It is quite interesting that the only thing to have survived the Soviet Union is its Jew-hatred.

Heart shattering it was. And thank you for your wake-up call.
I agree. Yaron is entitled to be remembered for who he was in his entirety not what fits someone's political agenda.

Agreed

They will target Christians later.
It will not be a coincidence.
Exactly.

I would prefer to head off the persecution wherever possible.
It might be inevitable, along with death, taxes, and Democrats, but that doesn't mean we should just accept it.
I agree wholeheartedly! In fact, I believe we will each be judged, at least in large part, on that very basis.
What starts with Jews has an irritatingly consistent habit of not ending with them

We as an assimilated people need to revisit some of Jabotinsky’s thinking. “Jews learn to shoot” sure seems to be appropriate wisdom for our age. I’m old now and a society that glorifies someone like Guy Christensen (sic) “Your Favorite Guy” offers folks like me a bleak future.
