Lovely post. Your family history is fascinating. I remember those fat Sunday newspapers. Yes, the NYT was dog-killer sized.
I was raised in a small west-central town in Minnesota. Perhaps twelve thousand when everyone was in town. Farming country; right on the edge of the lake country. Sundays were quiet: you could not buy gas, groceries or go to the drug store - nada. The day was a true shabbat, but of course we didn't call it that. It was a day of church and family get togethers. Only the most ungodly heathens mowed their lawns on Sunday afternoon. Whole different time. There were some good things.
Actually the paper that killed the dog was the LA Times. But the NYTimes was and is still pretty fat I understand. I haven't subscribed to anything but the puzzles since John McCain ran for POTUS.
I remember blue laws too. Nothing used to be open and you definitely couldn't buy liquor before noon. I remember once on the supermarket line, a woman was trying to by a 6 pack. The scanner wouldn't let her since it was like 2 minutes to 12. She was going to leave, but I told her to wait I didn't mind. I don't care what doctors or studies say, sometimes people do need that glass of wine/beer at the end of the day.
Spending time in bed is wonderful. I try to learn from my cat and take cat naps. I've had a recurring cold since I went back to teaching - kids are germ factories and I take urban public transit to urban public schools - so I've napped any chance I get when I'm not working. Loviefluffy kitty loves to nap with me. She only sleeps on my feet during day time naps. It is so good for resetting. Can I get your asparagus soup recipe? I made a lentil and couscous with lemon and hot chili oil soup yesterday. I'll post the recipe on my Substack!
If you make the asparagus soup, after pureeing it, you might need to strain it too to get rid of all the stringy bits. Using the immersion blender did not smooth it out enough. That happened today.
Cat naps is good. My greyhound lays at my feet when I nap, too.
The asparagus soup is easy. I cook/boil asparagus in chicken broth, blend it with a handheld immersion blender or in a blender, then add heavy cream to my liking. Some add a roux to make it thicker but I dont since I am gluten free and gluten free flour just doesn’t do the same with a roux. Its spice to taste too.
I love your posts. Thank you.
Thank you.

Thanks for the compliment.

That sounds fabulous! I love greyhounds too.
