I used to do these things to myself when I was a teenager. I should have no brain by now.

Teenagers bounce. That is their specialty. But we lose our elasticity as we age. Another thing they don't tell you about.

a friend once told me that everything that has gone wrong with her body was something that happened while she was trying to make herself "healthy".

another friend told me that when I got tired of hurting myself I would stop doing it.

both these things are true.

An older relative justified her not doing any sports by the fact that all her friends keep getting injured at the gym and she never does.

That's a little self defeating. There is chair yoga. No injuries and health benefits. :)
