Food
Hungry, then politics, then hungry again
One of the things you think about alot after getting a diagnosis of cancer is food, well that and trying not to die. Ok, we are all trying not to die in general, but once you get a diagnosis of a disease that could kill you, you tend to take this not wanting to die thing a little more serious than normal.
So I have cut out red meat, no deli meat (well maybe roasted chicken), eat more veggies, fruits, eat real eggs (funny how after all those years of telling us eggs were bad for your cholesterol they say its good now especially because of the vitamins), refrain from butter, don’t really eat cheese (once in awhile as a treat when I am feeling sorry for myself), no dairy in general, use avocado oil, olive oil, and even PAM spray. Ok, I don’t think you are supposed to use PAM, well according to MAHA, but most of them go crazy overboard so I generally ignore them, but I do have a filter on my water system. Not because of MAHA, but because there was so much silt in the very old town water pipes that my plumber recommended it.
And yes I drink coffee, black, no sugar or milk, and wine, of course wine. I know I am not supposed to drink wine. It’s a poison. The french paradox they wrote about years ago, that drinking red wine lowered your cholesterol was a faux pas. You know what? It’s not like I drink a bottle every day. But a glass a couple of times a week. Ok, the day after my latest surgery I had a nice bottle of rose sancerre, and drank probably 3/4s, but hashem punished me and I was hung over for a few days. Probably because even though I was told I could have alcohol after 24 hours, there was still some residual anesthesia in my system. Or quite frankly at 65, I can’t hold my liquor the way I used to.
Well actually, I could never hold my liquor. I was always what they would call a cheap date. 1 glass of wine and I was blotto. 2 glasses of wine and I would wobble.
Meanwhile, since the surgery, well actually for quite a bit now, since I actually gave up butter and all forms of cheese, I have been really hungry. I mean its “I want to eat a horse” kind of hungry. (Of course I would ever eat a horse. They are just too cute.). I find myself ravenous, and since the surgery I am eating, and I mean not a snack but, a full blown sit down at the table plate of food more than the requisite 3 meals a day. The nutritionist said its because I don’t have enough protein in my diet. Believe me when I say I do have enough protein. Believe me when I say I have enough of everything. I just can’t seem to get full.
Well I get full and then within 2 hours I am hungry again, especially if someone in the house makes something that smells really good.
This morning I made myself a protein bowel: quinoa (cooked in chicken broth), cucumber, tomato, avocado, beets, corn, 2 poached eggs, and yes it was delicious. (coffee too and then I had a square of milk chocolate. FWIW-I don’t eat alot of chocolate. Usually only 1 square (well maybe 2)) But my son made himself something that smells really good, and I am hungry again.
The scuttlebutt is that Ozempic cuts those food cravings or the food dialogue in your head. Listen, I don’t have a food dialogue in my head. I am not thinking about food all the time. I am not sitting planning my next meal (in fact, I get annoyed trying to figure out what to put on the table.) I simply get hungry. I also, like pavlov’s dog, get triggered by stuff that smells really good. (Ok that poor animal got triggered by a bell, but you get the idea I am trying to get across.)
And no, I am not going to go on Ozempic. I actually had an appointment to see someone about it, but I am really not interested. (I cancelled the appointment. I also read too many articles on the side effects and really do not like how so many celebrities look). I did read the study about Ozempic being able to forestall cancer becoming metastatic and I asked my oncologist. He told me that that study was misleading, because they don’t know if it was the Ozempic or the weight loss. Truth of the matter is that the fatter you are the more prone to cancer you become, and the more prone to cancer you become, the more likely your cancer can metastasize. But I don’t think people are actually exploring that fact. He said he can’t prescribe the Ozempic for me and I need to see a weight loss doctor.
(I decided to see if I can change my diet and up my exercise and see if this makes any difference in my weight. And no, I don’t know how much I weigh. Even when I had my surgery I turned around so I could not see my weight. I was borderline anorexic as a young woman, would spend my day counting calories, and would go into a major funk if my weight went up at all. I learned the best thing for my mental health was to not look at the scale, to try to exercise regularly and eat properly. Am I overweight? Yes. I don’t need a scale to tell me that. Most Americans could stand to lose some pounds. But I am otherwise very healthy. Which of course didn’t stop my old cardiologist from talking to me as if I was an intellectually disabled infant who needed help with understanding weight issues. I got a lecture about mindful eating. I then went and found a new cardiologist. Honestly, I didn’t go to that appointment either. Next year sometime. I have no more patience for doctors. When you get older its as if you live in a doctor’s office and after awhile it just gets ridiculous.)
Meanwhile, this past week on Bill Maher ( you all know how I like his show) he and Scott Galloway (of whom I am not a fan) were discussing among other things besides Fauci (a different subject for a different day when I don’t want to get my blood pressure up.) how everyone is going to be on Ozempic in 10 years and that there are so many side benefits (which they are showing there are) but those include stopping cancer. Now if they want to go on Ozempic (neither of them look like they need it) that is fine, but promoting unverified medical talking points is not right of them. However, on the other hand, they did mention that one of the major threats to getting COVID was being obese. Something the government refused to tell people. Masks you had to wear, 2 year olds had to wear masks, but telling people to put down the cheesecake was not a government talking point, body positivity and all that political bullshit.
Ok, yes Bill also took off on the DSA, the DNC enablers of these commies imbeciles. HERE When such a democratic stalwart as Maher is telling the democrats that his vote is up for grabs maybe someone among them might want to take notice. Socialism/commie crap is not going to win fly over country no matter how many vote for this stupidity in Manhattan or LA or how many sickos wipe Bernie’s ass.
Meanwhile, the hubby and I had a coffee date by going food shopping for the items him and my younger son did not find at Costco yesterday. Yes, I live an exciting life of adventure and danger. Being driven to the local supermarket by a man who walks half crooked since his stroke several years ago is enough of a challenge. (the stroke went only to his eye luckily) In fact, as I watched him walk today I remarked that I definitely think that the stroke effected more than just his eye. Ever since the stroke he never walked properly. Shuffling along like one of those old Jewish men on Miami Beach. He did casually remark that considering they missed his stroke initially when he went to the ER, the doctors, and there were myriads of them eventually, probably didn’t think much of his walk, since the stroke was not in his brain. He never got PT for his walk, but now there are other issues with his ankles and lower legs, varicose veins and the like that need taking care of. So maybe we can get them to listen. And yes he had full MRIs, and every test imageable. None of them showed anything about his gait.
As soon as our date was over, we came home and once again, I, well everyone was thinking about food. The hubby and sons were going to see the Spiderman movie (I hope they have fun), so food was gobbled down. Now, I get to be in the house alone, well me and the dog. This never happens. It is so quiet.
So what did I have for lunch? I ripped apart a Costco roast chicken ( and yes I know they are probably not good for you with all the crap that makes the chicken taste good). The dark meat went to the dog, who ate one bowl and turned her nose up at a second. I swear I have the only dog on the planet who is finicky. (She should have been born a cat, or maybe she is a cat reincarnated). I took one of the white meat breasts, sliced it for a nice cold chicken sandwich on gluten free bread with ketchup and sauerkraut (gotta work on that gut biome). Not chicken salad. (while I do use mayo, I do try to keep it limited to a little with tuna.) I really just like cold plain breast meat.
Meanwhile, I am now thinking about dinner.
Not because I am hungry. I think I finally feel full at the moment. Maybe its the bubbles from the seltzer I drank with my sandwich, or maybe I had enough protein. But then again my breakfast was mostly protein, quinoa and eggs; the avocado was a good fat; and the rest were high fiber veggies. So I truly am at a loss. Maybe, just maybe I am thinking too much about this.
But eventually everyone is going to be hungry again, and they are going to want dinner. I think we will just finish off the what is left of the Costco roasted chicken (I did buy 2 so there is plenty enough for 4 adults.)
Of course, I could obsess about something other than food, maybe about the fact that my insurance still hasn’t paid the hospital bill from last July and it just didn’t pay the new surgery bill. We did ask google and found out in NY state the providing surgical center/hospital has to make sure that pre-certification is not needed, and if they didn’t do their job right that is on them. Again, the doctors were all paid, but not where the surgery took place. I just can’t anymore with insurance companies. Hubby said to stop worrying about it. Ok, sure….it is very quiet at 3am when I wake up and can’t get back to sleep, so what else am I supposed to do except go down a rabbit hole? There isn’t enough melatonin in the world….
Then of course the psycho behind the resolute desk has decided to call off his latest attack on Iran and declare victory, and that there is a new “peace agreement,” which Iran said there is not. Apparently, MBS being the spineless, creepy creep psycho asked Trump not to attack Iran and Trump said “okeedokee,” because it seems that US foreign policy is now made in Riyadh. Must be disappointing to the Islamo-nazi lunatics like Cenk, Hasan Piker, the DSA, Sally Rooney, Javier Bardem, the Spanish government, most of the democratic party in fact, to find out that Jerusalem isn’t running Foggy Bottom, ARAMCO leads the way.
Oh and apparently leading Palestinian negotiators, along with the ironically named Board of Peace, said Hamas has agreed to disarm, and he (well Jared sorta) promised Hamas that Israel would stop killing Hamasniks. That’s really nice of Jared to have decided that for Israel. Of course, after that announcement Israel blew to kingdom come another bottom feeder that invaded Israel on October 7. Then it was announced that the continued hunting of these barbarian shitbags was being negotiated with Israel. (Eat shit and die all the genocidal mother fuckers and those that would protect them.) No Israeli politician is going to agree to end those search and destroy missions, especially not with elections looming in October.
It would be nice to think that our government, the US government, would do the same if American citizens were massacred. But I don’t see it happening, Ok yes the US did hunt down Osama Bin Laden, but can you see it being done today, especially if the Democrats regain power? They are like Tim Waltz, who last week pardoned a pedophile rapists to try to keep them from being deported. I mean it’s not like we don’t have enough of our own American citizen pedophile rapists, apparently according to the democrats we need to keep the ones who come into the country illegally.
Now when questioned our almost US VP, said that no one should be judged by their worst day. Hmmmm, ok, my worst days were when both my parents died. Raise your hand if your worst day is getting sent to prison for having raped a child for 3 years from the age of 7 until she was 10. Waltz has a very different defintion of worst day of your life than I do, than I suspect most moral people do. Wonder what the child victim’s worse day was. Did Waltz bother to ask her?
We are capitalists, not socialists. We want safety not lawlessness. We are proud not ashamed of America.
I can’t tell if this insanity is simply TDS or the democrats are truly out of their fucking minds at this point. Hubby said they have completely lost their minds.
Meanwhile, back to planning what to have with the Costco roast chicken for dinner.
Oh, I also bought a new coffeemaker. No matter what I did, my coffee tasted kind of weak. Even when it was brewed on bold. No, it is not the brand of coffee. I drink Chock Full O’Nuts. Good. Sturdy. New York City coffee for this girl born in the Bronx. So, I researched what are the best drip coffee makers of 2026, and considering I do not want to spend $400 on a new coffee maker (honestly, WTF), I bought the Ninja coffee maker, which the reviews said was the best for the economy minded coffee drinker. I had a Cuisinart for the past few years, and the reviews say they produce bad coffee, so did not want to get another one. I think they were correct with that review. I do keep going back to Cuisinart, but am generally never happy with it. I do remember getting a Ninja coffee maker before though. Traded it in for a KitchenAide. But, the Kitchen Aide did not brew a good cup of coffee. And neither did the SMEG I had (reviews agreed). So the Ninja machine comes tomorrow. Hoping the reviews are right. That they have finagled the machine and it works better and I can look forward to a decent cup of coffee on Tuesday. Wish me luck.
Wouldn’t that be nice if this was my biggest problem?
The coffee pot pictured is the Aiden Coffee Maker, it retails for $399. Listed by most leading magazines and review sites as one of the best on the market.

Another beautifully written piece.
I recently lost quite a lot of weight, and I did it by walking for miles and miles. I felt like it took forever. It is hard.
This piece is full of your spunk. I love it.
